★☆☆☆☆
Nonsensical (Major Spoilers)
There were two things that made this book a chore to wade through. First, the writing style favored short, choppy, stilted sentences. The unnatural feel of the dialogue detracted from any sense of immersion. Second, and most importantly, nothing in the plot made any sense at all. SPOILERS BELOW. For example, when the bad guys are mysteriously tracking the "stealth ship", one of the crew has an epiphany. "Do you think our continuous use of active sensors may be somehow to blame?" If you don't get why that is a problem then you'll probably love the book. Another example...hacking. Apparently Earth's hacking skills are the strategic advantage that will save the human race. The evil bad guy aliens' society is completely run by computers, but they have no defenses against hacking. Why not? Because there is no hacking in the rest of the galaxy. Why isn't there hacking? Because...wait for it...hacking is illegal! What a brilliant solution. I wonder why we didn't think of it? So humanity is saved because the protagonists (who weren't Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum) hack the super-intelligent alien AI. And how about FTL communications? As easy as making a cell phone call in the book. But somehow the alien AIs only "phone home" once every 100 years. Maybe the aliens should invest in a few wifi video cameras. And the secret plan to reclaim the galaxy for humanity? Secretly tell people on hundreds of occupied planets that the secret resistance really exists, and will be ready to liberate them in 100 years. Later it is casually mentioned that the alien bad guys have spies.
