. I was reading 'City of Girls,' and enjoying it, when I read this description of Olive, a dour lady who 'looked like a school librarian. She looked like a school librarian's mother.' Three pages later -'homely librarian.' I am a librarian, and I am sick of this inaccurate stereotype. We buy E books for the library. We buy DVDs for the library, including DVDs of films made of Gilbert's books.We are not all dour white women. Many of us are male. 99.9% of us are helpful, compassionate people who work for sometimes not enough money or respect to help our patrons find what they need and teach them to navigate the increasingly complex world of information. Almost half of the country uses libraries for Internet access, as they cannot afford to have it at home. This includes some elderly people, who are new to the digital world but must use it for an increasing amount of important communication. We also introduce reading to many children. Libraries are no longer just places to find books. We provide free access to ebooks, scholarly and popular articles, streaming databases and databases such as Rosetta Stone. We are multicultural. Many are young and cool. The coolest librarian I ever met was an African American man who worked at an Ivy League college, dreadlocks, sharp suits and all. From now on I am sticking to Lisa Scottoline. She loves librarians and has been known to address library conferences for free. When I think of the invaluable help librarians gave job searchers during the recession ..... I am too angry to say more.
