Kreg K5 let down
I bought the K5 back in January and am finally getting to the point of being able to use it. I've heard nothing but good reviews on the Kreg system and have had a brief experience in using it so I was confident in my choice. I have just finished setting up a wood shop and am beginning to build myself a custom kitchen in my 1919 Craftsman Style home. Working on a production workflow. Here's the problem with the K5. When setting the jig you need to set the bit guide to the proper thickness of the wood you are working with. I am working with 3/4" baltic birch ply. I've been told about the need to adjust for the actual thickness - all 3/4" ply does not actually measure 3/4". No problem, adjust the stop collar accordingly to set the drill depth. A bit of trial and error but once you get it and don't mix and match plywood you're good to go. Then you discover things aren't going quite right. The screws are poking through the joined piece... pocket holes are too deep. On the older K4 the depth setting on the bit guide was secured by an actual set screw. A really nice well sized brass set screw. It provided a positive lock on the guide. On the K5 it's a flimsy spring loaded pin. Unless you're going to baby your way through each pocket drill this pin just doesn't make it. Three holes and it slips out and the guide drops and you're drilling too deep of a hole. A seriously major pain. Totally unacceptable. I cannot work under a shadow of unreliability, too much at stake. I have just ordered a K4 and will be happy in knowing a have a backup of replaceable parts to keep it running flawlessly. What a shame they found the need to cheap out a fine product.
