Frustrating, but I made it work.
I was impressed with the overall quality of this dolly. It went together nicely and looked well made. But when I went to use it to transport my Ocean Kayak from my garage through my grass and to the dock, I had a very difficult time. This is what I found out.
1. Using the bungee cords provided was a big mistake. They are way to flexible and do not hold the kayak firmly to the dolly. The slightest bump or resistance in the lawn caused the dolly to shift out of position, sometime sidewards. At one point, the kayak fell over and it was tanged in the bungees within the dolly, Use the supplied black strap instead, and make sure you pull it really tight.
2. The pictures on Amazon shows the "kick stand" forward. If you pull the kayak that way and it hits some grass, the dolly collapses. Very frustrating. I use it with the kick stand trailing. It cant get caught if it is behind the kayak.
3.The bolts that hold it together are spring loaded to allow it to collapse for storage. Well that it does, but it will also collapse when you are moving your kayak. I ended up completely tightening those bolts so it would no longer collapse. Allowing it to collapse does not save that much room anyways.
4. The most significant problem was the curvature, or lack of curvature of the dolly cross members. If your kayak has any keel or is not relatively flat, the kayak will sit on the middle of the cross bars and not be properly supported. The rubber cushons on the aluminum cross members are way to thin to do much good. When that happens, it is impossible to move the kayak without the dolly shifting because it is only resting on the keel. I moved the bumpers out of the way and I had to install 2 x 2 wood cross members with rubber on them to increase the contact area. It was time consuming but now the dolly seems to work. Not sure why they designed it to be so "flat." Might be good for some kayaks but making a better "v" shape or providing bumpers that are much, much thicker, would accommodate a lot more kayak designs.
