Intriguing Idea Implemented Poorly
Although Blackout was an odd and ultimately unsuccessful mix of domestic drama, thriller, and sci-fi, I found the basic premise of capturing human brain waves to ultimately control human beings-- women-- fascinating and worthy of a read. Unfortunately, author Erin Flanagan does not pull off the scientific gravitas in her writing to make this premise believeable. In addition, the subjects she tackles in Blackout: alcoholism, which is handled quite well, relationship communications, rape, misogyny, white male dominance, and the subjugation of women are so varied and many that one cannot help but feel certain areas are glossed over. For example, her dialogue, especially with 2nd husband Noel lacks depth, their reconciliation scene being a prime example. Perhaps though, the biggest flaw that dooms this endeavor is her broadstroke vitriolic indictment of white males. White male dominance is a worthy subject to examine in either fiction or non-fiction. But when the author presents her views so acidly, the book becomes irredeemable. My recommendation would be a pass.
