Lost Cause
This is another romanticized book pushing the Lost Cause ideology. This book is dangerous to the public memory of the American Civil War and only serves to confirm the bias of "unReconstructed" southerners. I would classify this book as historical fiction at best. Major political themes of the 1800s are omitted and the impact of southern slavery on American politics is downplayed in order to convince the reader that it was "states' rights," and not slavery, that caused the breakout of hostilities in 1861. Unfortunately, this is the only history of the American Civil War that some people will ever read. As a professional historian, these kinds of books concern me. It will be very difficult to undo the damage to American history done by these types of works.
