I wish I hadn't finished this
I really wanted to like this book.
It started out like a promising read. The heroine seemed different from the usual romance heroine, the hero came across as attractive. I settled in for a good read.
My problem this book is with the heroine. She started out acting as if she had brains, but by the end she made such foolish choices that I wanted to throw the book against the wall.
If you read further, you'll encounter spoilers. Be warned.

The lowest point was when she decided that they needed to consummate their relationship. At that point, they were tied up by the evil nasty villains and thrown into a room unattended, together, so that they could plan an escape while the henchman waited outside. (For some reason, villains have a tendency to do this sort of thing.) The heroine asks the hero to make love to her, he explains that he can't get his trousers off while his hands are tied behind his back, and she pouts. "I wouldn't think a little thing like that could stop his majesty's smartest spy."
Another quote: "She stomped her foot. 'I do so-o-o-o-o regret all the hours we can never recapture, hours when we could have been making love."
I did like that the heroine did not undergo a magical Cinderella transformation. She starts out more interested in books than in fashion, and she doesn't change in that respect. And the author did a good job writing weaving in actual people from history into the story, which is sometimes tricky. But I feel sorry for the hero being saddled with this foot-stomping heroine.
