death
On April 17, 2016 I went to the local home depot and purchased a product which in my mind was safe. Arm and Hammer carpet deodorizer with oxiclean. Of course the normal precautions were on there like skin contact, inhalation, etc which I wasn’t too worried about because I was gonna use this on my carpets according to directions and do a good vacuum. I used it as directed and vacuumed the carpets in my house at least 4 rounds. The fragrance was extremely intense and I had to open the windows, turn on the vents, run air purifiers to clear it out. It took about 4 days before I would notice a decrease in the smell. It was pretty nauseating and overwhelming. My wife was complaining a lot that it felt like it was choking her but I told her that the air will eventually clear after time and apologized cause I didn’t know how strong it would be. On May 2, 2016 my dog was having respiratory issues. He has never had any in the past, so I took him in to the vet. All things checked out normal, but I couldn’t get a chest x-ray because the machine was broken, and it was going to be fixed the next day. May 3, 2016 my dog is completely out of breath. I was thinking he might have pneumonia or some other infection causing him to be so tired, weak, unable to walk, and lethargic. That day he was hospitalized and placed in a special oxygenation cage. His O2 sats were around 84 in the cage whereas normal is 99. When taken out of the cage, his O2 sats dropped to 69. X-rays showed some swollen alveolar tissue but the only way to find out what it is was to do a biopsy, but my dog wouldn’t survive a trip to the local facility because it would take over 30 minutes and he would run out of oxygen. His labs came out negative for infection, heartworm, a little elevated kidney values but that was due to old age and a preexisting kidney issue. So the vet and I were puzzled until at the moment I realized that I had used the carpet deodorizer a couple weeks earlier. I decided not to try for the biopsy because he would probably die on the way there and even at that point, if I found out it was cancer or some other issue, there is nothing I could do. Just treating my dog for oxygen for a day was $500. The hospital fee for a day was running at $1100 and up. It broke my heart that I had to make the ultimate decision to euthanize him on May 4, 2016. This condition came out of the blue and did not present previous to May 3rd. I am completely saddened, depressed, and feel a heavy burden of guilt for having caused this and am more upset at the company who I have learned to trust throughout my life. Upon going to amazon and reading reviews, etc, I draw to the morbid conclusion that this product is extremely unsafe to use where there are any living life forms that require oxygen. Please if you have pets or even care for your health or the health of your family, DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! It is dangerous. Don’t let the arm and hammer name give you a false sense of security. I will have to live with this til the day I die and hopefully my dog forgives me. I was looking straight into his eyes as they induced him into sleep and shut down his heart. His eyes remained open looking at me as he left this earth (an image I can never erase from my mind). Now his ashes remain in a box near the area where he used to sleep. I can never forgive myself. I hate you so much arm and hammer!
