SMR drive that is unsuitable as an external drive
Unfortunetly the hard drive manufacturers have been using this unreliable SMR technology to reduce costs on their drives, without telling consumers. There are many news articles about this. I had backed up 1.5TB of data to this drive over the course of 6 months and what happened is suddenly the write speeds were jumping to 0.1MB making it essentially take forever to transfer files. Not only that but even read speeds were going that slow! I thought for sure drive must be failing and I was worried all my data was gone. After a day of stress, I found out actually it is an SMR (shingled) drive and it was busy "defragging". This is not the type of fragmentation that can be solved with defragging software but due to the shingled technology of the drive. The fix was to leave it plugged in to my computer for 12 hours or so and eventually it was able to "defrag" and work again like normal. This is not what I expect from a hard drive.
