once it works its awesome, untill then prepare for pain
This review is for is to inform consumers about a rather severe problem that this unit has an issue with and how to fix it. PRE: This unit when it was shipped by Onkyo was part of a line of units that were to feature new and improved networking components for networked home theater management. However, the firmware installed on the units was as Onkyo puts it- not the correct version. In short the unit can be a brick out of the box and nothing works until you follow there new update procedure as described online if the unit contains the original firmware from the factory. I received one of these units. To fix this you will have to re flash the firmware on the unit manually, as per Onkyo all "networked" (internet based) rom flashing is no longer done for this unit. So if you care not to return it and you want to fix it: 1. get a usb 2.0 flash key of about 4G or smaller and in windows format it to regular FAT32. more "advanced" keys capable of teleportation are not recognized 2. Go to Onkyo's website and download the rom zip for the unit, 3. extract the entire zip to the key there will be several files the format looks like x7x8x8x8x.bla x7x8x8x8x.bla x7x8x8x8x.bla <folder> 4. Take that and plug it into the unit, turn the unit by pushing the power button on the unit, THEN with your remote guide the unit to usb update, and update 5. go make a sandwich and wait for the unit to finish- 6. once that's done, exit menu, turn off unit, unplug it (cause a full power cycle is recommended), tap dance for 1 minute, then plug it back in and using your remote turn on the unit, it will boot and reset it self, From there follow the audio setup as described in the instructions and your done. I will say once it works the sound quality is solid- but this firmware quality issue is really pathetic, your gonna have a bad time getting the unit to run.
