SOG F08 Review - Its COMPLETE CRAP - Don't waste your money!!!
I bought 5 of these, (not from this amazon supplier but from a reputable online knife store) hoping to get something better than StanSport, Coghlans or 'Random Chinese Brand X' ... But I got 5 REDICULOUS PIECES OF COMPLETE CRAP!
Looks like SOG found a supplier to make them even CHEAPER than StanSport, Coghlans or TexSport and just spray painted their name on it (which scrapes off easily with your fingernail btw).
1. I CAN FLEX AND BEND THE BLADE WITH MY BARE HANDS! No kidding. Hardened steel... my (insert curse here). If its hardened, it didn't work. They say its serrated for slashing and cutting, what a joke. The serrations are stamped and the tips are rounded. You couldn't even scratch your back with this thing.
2. The shovel DOESN'T EVEN LOCK OUT STRAIGHT!! What kind of crap is that! Literally looks like a hockey stick when its fully extended and locked. Even if you tighten it as hard as you can, if you don't dig with it just at the correct angle, it folds up and crushes your hand.
If you plan on using it as a sanitation tool, (e.g. bathroom trench and seat) you'll end up in your own excrement. You CANNOT SIT OR PUT WEIGHT ON THE HANDLE OR THE SHOVEL WILL FOLD AND YOU'LL END UP ON YOUR ***.
The main problem is that the washer thats pushed up to the shovel and pick supports by the screw lock is made of *soft* metal. When you lock it in place with the screw lock, you can make the shovel fold because the washer bends *easily*. It allows you to wiggle the shovel around, so digging with this thing after a couple scoops is like digging with a mud flap. Also, the support that's pinned to the shovel blade is made of soft metal that deforms when any pressure is appplied to it. So if you remove the pick, I wouldn't trust the main shovel blade stays to support themselves alone while digging.
I called SOG support and their response was that it was supposed to be bent like that because its "an entrenching tool" ... wow. I don't think anyone over there has even ever tried to use it. If they did, I'd like to know why they added that cool feature where it folds forward on your hand while digging, crushing your hand.
3. The bolts that hold it together are thin, threaded completely and look like some pansy picked them out at the corner hardware store for a 'craft' project. I wouldn't trust digging with this where the blade is at an angle; the bolt will shear right off and cheap sheet metal and parts may (read:will) fly off and hurt someone (read:you).
4. The case is complete crap!
Made out of a thin plasticized cheap nylon material with a tiny spot of velcro. It doesn't look like you could attach it to your pack and walk through one bush and still have the shovel. Its more of a 'dust cover'
I'm soooo disappointed. The StanSport, Coghlans or TexSport shovel is actually a complete step above for less money. If a SOG label, spray painted on, that you can literally scrape off *easily* with your fingernail, is worth the extra cash to you over a much better Chineese brand X... then this shovel is for you!
Otherwise, AVOID IT! IT WILL COMPLETELY DISAPPOINT YOU!
I just lost all respect for SOG, what a JOKE and a complete insult. SOG should be embarrassed. I've never seen such a piece of junk produced by them before but apparently, if this got through their ranks, thats the new trend.
Now I've got to go through the pain of shipping them all back!
