Dead after 7.5 months
(See my 2/27/15 update below.) This portable am/fm/cd player, with a cassette player and recorder as well, has a smaller footprint by about a third than others with these features -- which for me is a big plus. Unfortunately, the sound is weak and at times muffled, with no adjustment except "megabass", and the radio reception is uneven. I'm keeping it as a back-up should my other (larger and vasty superior) Panasonic fail. I really expected better sound from Sony, but at $50 it's worth keeping as a bedside player. UPDATE, 9/4/14: Just updating to say that the FM reception is terrible, sometimes too much static and interference to bother listening. Others may have better luck if they are located better, but I have had better reception on other units. UPDATE, 11/7/14: now that I've had this unit for over three months, I'm sorry I didn't return it once I encountered features I didn't like (tinny sound, poor FM reception). It just isn't worth the money. With such poor quality, I reduced my rating to one star. And considering the inconsistencies of the listings of this model online (below), I recommend people look to other models, or if possible, spend a little more on the Panasonic RX-D55GC-K, also on Amazon for varying prices. In sound and quality of build, it makes the Sony a pygmy in its class. And it has all the formats (CD, tape, FM) Sony boasts, plus a remote and timer. UPDATE, 2/27/15: After 7 1/2 months, the unit's buttons don't work, i.e., on/off, volume, station change, even switching to CD or tape -- no response at all. I can listen to the FM station it's now tuned to, and turn off by pulling the plug. That's it! More regret. DON'T BUY THIS SONY MODEL -- worst Sony quality I ever encountered. ADDENDUM: I've been monitoring Amazon listings of Sony boomboxes -- there is one that is supposed to be the same model (CFD-S50) selling for $75, instead of $50. The photo makes it appear larger than the one I bought for $50, but I was told it's the very same model. In addition, the measurements of this unit online vary depending which you're looking at, AND they vary from my unit, which is 12 inches wide at most, NOT 14 (mine is roughly 12 x 9 x 5). This difference in size may account for the difference in sound between the good reviews and mine. There is a scam going on here -- or at least wildly inconsistent manufacturing! Just for irony, the $75 model (also CFD-S50) has the smaller footprint, while the one appearing smaller (the one I bought) has the larger measurements listed. What? In any case, it's not worth buying per my experience at 2/27 update above.
