★★☆☆☆
Several good points, a couple of "flaws"
* See bottom for 1 month ownership assessment
I own an Omron HBF-500 scale right now which I use daily. I normally do daily-weigh ins to catch trends in my habits.
I've been waiting for the WS-50 as it supports wireless N and had some additional functionality.
Good:
Supports wireless N
App available for both Iphone and Android
It's thin enough my bathroom door can swing over it.
Very intuitive to set up for a "tech-savvy" person
Fat & BMI measurements were within ~.5 of my Omron's measurements
It recognizes "unknown" users and allows you to add them to your app for tracking (very cleanly)
No waiting for "zeroing", you just stand on it and away it goes.
Local LCD display gives you all the measured information cleanly and in sequence
Bad:
Temperature readings were way off on first try, almost as if it was taking the temp of my feet and not ambient. (have to test more, not conclusive) ** Working See EDIT1
CO2 levels read "very bad" @ 64,000. It seems something is faulty. (have to test more here as well) **Working See EDIT2
Weight seems to show a slightly higher value (3lbs in my case, but I will try to get some standardized weights to test more)
No troubleshooting notes in manual (Generally speaking I would say you don't need it, but in my case I would have liked more information about the Co2 measurements)
It wasn't immediately obvious that wifi is set up by using the phone App. (I'm one of those people that fully ignores the manual to get an idea of how well a "first use" goes)
Notes:
Setup is fairly intuitive despite what I mentioned earlier.
I had installed the withings app and created an account in preparation for the scale. When I got the scale, I pulled the tab in the back for the batteries to connect (they come preinstalled (4AAA)) and held the pairing button in the back. After I paired it with my Android phone, the app registered the scale and allowed me to connect to my local wifi network then just put the scale down and it was ready to use. Hope this is helpful.
*If you are reading this Withings, when pairing bluetooth, the app responded with something about "iphone" on my android phone. It might be wise to do a "search and replace" on the entirety of the App text.
Edit 1:
Temperature measurements are now spot-on, it must have been a temporary glitch.
CO2 measurements are faulty in software or hardware. It reads either 65000 or 17. I left it outside, upstairs, downstairs, same result. I'm hoping this is a software issue but I might return just based on this.
Weight & Heart Rate are accurate enough for it's purposes. I've had several people use it as well, ranging from 77lbs-205lbs.
About the App:
I second what other's have said about the Android app.
You have to click on the butterfly to get into the dashboard, it always feels like a loading screen and causes unnecessary wait.
Dialogs mention "iphone" on an android phone
Very easy to remove the modules that display the various measurements, (weight, heat rate, etc.) but rather counter-intuitive to add back up.
Some nice to have features on the app:
Add display for Basal Metabolic Rate(BMR) and other simple, "derived" calculations from existing data.
Allow measurements to be stacked on the main display, not have to rotate through pre-defined groups. (I would like to have weight, fat, heart rate & bmi stacked on the main screen without swiping)
Shorter or infinitely custom graph history spans. (I would like to keep 1week of data points at start not 3 month default)
Aggressively attempt to partner and integrate with the other activity/sleep meters on the market. (Fitbit Flex, Jawbone Up)
Edit 2:
CO2 readings magically started indicating values which perhaps could be "accurate" (Looks like a firmware update from withings)
1 month later:
Weight measurement - I don't have the trust I expected on this scale. I find myself now stepping on both the withings and my old Omron scale then getting an average of the 2 readings. It's very simple for the withings to read inconsistently and that alone is it's greatest flaw. Additionally, it seems to need a minimum weight to operate. When I tried to used calibrated 6lbs weights, it failed to measure at all, while my Omron happily gave me the reading. This may be due to the nature of the sensors (non-linear) not sure, but if the Omron can do it, I would have hoped this one did too.
Fat Measurement - I haven't written this off yet as I haven't had a professional fat analysis done but I can say that I have measured a few friends with weird results. One friend consistently read's 3-4% (she's 78lbs) but not an athlete. I also measured my sister who is a gym instructor and it said she's 30% body fat when she has defined abs. I'm very skeptical about this at this point.
Heart Rate - This also seems to constantly fail to read and then blink an "X" as it wasn't able to measure.
Display - Initially, I thought the sequence of measurements on the scale was a good thing. Now I feel that after you get through the cycle, it doesn't give you a more persistent aggregation of measurements or perhaps even just weight staying on for another 5 seconds. It all ends too fast, sometimes I still want to process what I just saw.
Withings overall seem very responsive to feedback, perhaps from this site or forums so I'm hoping some of these items can be fixed in software. That being said, I have downgraded this to 2 stars as the main feature of the scale, I find to be unreliable.
