This pad shrinks away from the sides and gets thinner over time even if stored in its box in a cool, dark place between uses. I only got one summer of use out of it before it became a shadow of the original product. My pets did enjoy it the first few months, so it might be useful if viewed as a disposable product that must be replaced annually. In the picture the tip of the measuring tape is touching the remaining gel to show the extent of the shrinkage. When I received the pad, the gel was much thicker and extended all the way to the edges. Poor shrunken pad.
