★☆☆☆☆
The CG artists are the real heroes.
The only redeeming factor is the CG. As a cg artist myself, I can see the hard work those fellas put in. The world looks amazing! That's it though. Story... meh. Its a first episode so its setting stuff up. I don't expect it to be highly energized, but expected it to have something, anything that reels me in. The 1st episode, an hour long, was a slog to get through. Nothing that captivated me. In fact made me want to fast forward more than anything, as it made me feel like I was wasting my free time. Visuals- Just an absolute joy to behold. The scale, The lighting especially the orange sunset shots. I'd watch a demo reel with just the CG more than the actual show. Action- Felt incredibly sterile. The Elves v Orcs scene where Galadriel's brother was in, that took place during her narration just felt... not weighty? A lack of momentum or grit, maybe. Can't really place it. Later during a scene featuring a snow troll. Again felt off. Might be the camera work, but the troll didn't have any oomph. No weight at all. Made the CG-ness of the monster feel like it wasn't grounded in our world. Overall, I believe the action could be done better by a small college indie studio. Music- Nothing that I registered as great. In conclusion- The first episode has one thing that it has to do. Make the audience invested. Make a promise of future greatness. The first episode is an embodiment of what to expect for the rest of the series. It just didn't keep me. I'll go watch the inevitable CG shot compilation on Youtube when it comes out. Give a CG artist a hug. They really deserve it for making beautiful worlds, if given enough time. :)
