★☆☆☆☆
Not even worth a one star rating.
I didn't buy the book, but rather read it online. The protagonist James is a pompous, judgmental little snot who looks down on everyone and always assumes the worst about people because he can't be bothered to actually get to know them. This book CONSTANTLY breaks the rule of "Show, don't tell" in that James always assumes what people are thinking and feeling. He is so pretentious and arrogant that I actually ENJOYED one of the earlier chapters where he got his a*s kicked by a jock named Jason. Every supporting character is a one-dimensional stereotype. Abbigale, James' co-dependent girlfriend, is a Mary Sue whose only trait is her love for James. His friend, Davis, is a goofball who provides cringe-worthy "comic relief." The antagonist, Seth, is a douche bag whose existence is solely to make James appear all the more awesome. In fact, several gratuitous scenes, including a school shooting, were only placed in the book to boost James' image as a hero. I don't mind violent subject matter, but the author uses it in such a superfluous and self-serving context that's downright disturbing. Don't even get me started on the constant mistakes in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Onision needs to be ashamed of himself for being a 30-something-year-old who writes about as well as a fanfic writer in the 2nd grade. The only good thing to come out of this book is all the hilarious negative reviews.
