Poorly written, with no editor. The concept seems decent, but the story tends to repeat, and multiple characters who occupy entire chapters, never see a climax in this book. I understand that the author is trying to keep people coming back to get closure, but it's bad writing. The ending is abrupt, and most of what little tension she had built is lost in a single page. Of course, most people probably wouldn't get past chapter 3 before being overwhelmed by the elementary level writing.
Some useful tips for Ms. Rice:
1. Pronouns are a good thing, use them more often.
2. Use some creativity to get outside of the character's head. Tell a little more of the story instead of focusing so much on how respected or ignored the character feels. On that note...
3. We get it, it's important to all of your characters to be recognized. Saying it 3 times in each chapter is completely unnecessary.
4. Please, please, please, have someone proof your work before you subject innocent readers to it. They'll tell you that some things don't make sense, or that you missed words, or mixed up names, or maybe even that this entire story could not possibly take place in just two days, even if the people in Escalon never slept like some of them do in your book.
