Doesn't last a year - Update April 2013
I bought the GE ADER65LN Dehumidifier after two other brands failed a few months after their warrenty expired. I had an LG that had its' compressor fail. Repair costs were almost as much as a new one. So I scraped it and bought a Kenmore at Sears. That one lasted as about as long as the LG with another compressor failure. When I looked inside the cabinet I found the Kenmore was made by LG.
I then researched Consumer Reports and online reviews for the most reliable and best operating dehumidifier. The GE was rated the best so I bought one last year. I went to use it this May and guess what? It didn't work. I checked the evaporator coil and it was not getting cold. This time I was still under warrenty so I took it into the dealer for repair. I got a call back and was told the the compressor was bad. Big surprise! GE is giving me a rebate coupon for the price I payed for the unit. I must buy another GE dehumidifier and send a copy of the invoice and the coupon to get my money back.
I'm a graduate engineer that knows a dehumidier is not "rocket science". The reliability of the LG, Kenmore (LG) and GE is terrible. I had a Fedders dehumidifier for 25 years and only replaced it because I needed more capacity. Never had one problem with Fedders, but it was made in the USA!
Update April 30, 2013 - I'm now on my THIRD GE 65 pint Dehumidifier Failure!!! In June 2012 I had the second dehumidifier fail the same as the first. I again carried it back to the dealer's service department and they confirmed the compressor was dead. I received another voucher to send in AFTER I purchased the third GE 65 pint dehumidifier. That one lasted all Summer of 2012. I put the unit away for the winter and just took it out today to see if it still worked before the humidity increased during the Summer. Guess what? It doesn't work! I ran the unit for 4 hours in a 70 F Basement room with 60 RH. I checked the evaporator coils and they are not getting cold. The compressor is running and feels hot. I'm guessing the refrigerant has leaked out. I'm taking it in again to the service department, but this is the last time. These China made units are JUNK!
