Be Forewarned....not a cozy romance story
At first I thought this would be a light-hearted romantic story, albeit with some rather sinister undertones. Some of the situations became rather difficult to understand (as well as unbelievable) as it went along, such as the segue from Freddie's being a somewhat plain, frumpy, unattractive older sister to her beautiful younger sibling, to someone unbelievably handsome Tristan quickly found to be so beguiling, beautiful and completely irresistible. When did the ugly duckling become a swan? Then there's the loathsome Elias Harker, whom she chose to believe was a patriot even though he was blackmailing her into doing his bidding, while also mistreating her Mother in very sinister ways and threatening to do likewise to her sister. Then came the onset of the lust-fest between Freddie and Tristan, leading to a very graphic and totally out of place sexual encounter between them that no decent English woman of 1806 would have even considered as a possibility. I was appalled when that was thrown into what had up until that point been a mostly tame and tolerable pursuit between the two. I won't be buying any more books in this series, that's for sure.
