Kit contaminated with mold during manufacturing
One of 4 test kits was visibly contaminated (see photo of the dish). That dish was never opened prior to the photo, just removed from its bag to be photographed. I tested whether the spot was mold by quickly (within a couple of seconds) adding growth medium and immediately re-covering the dish (without further exposing it to the environment) and placing it back in its bag. Two days later there was a large mold colony right at the contaminated spot (which I had marked on the outside of the dish with a marker). Makes me question whether the other kits were also contaminated, but with spots too small to be visible to the naked eye.
I would not trust these kits. It is too easy for contamination introduced in manufacturing to show up as what you think is mold in your home. And then you spend your time and money trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist. That has caused me to give my first 1 star review on Amazon (at least as much as I can recall).
Update: I finally got a replacement for the clearly contaminated kit from Mold Armor and tested it for mold growth without exposure to either the environment or swabbed spores. There was no growth. Based on that I conclude that not kits are contaminated. I can't judge whether that is true in general, or if this replacement kit was hand picked by them from kits that were known to be contaminant free.
