Great grill for a mechanic.
Bought Texas Grill last Aug. Love the food. Been broken 5 times. Including National Championship day, Easter, Mothers day and Today. Trager's response...you still have plenty of warranty left. Thanks. I didn't know I'd have to be a mechanic to own a Traeger, sure glad they moved production to China. Update - I bought it in Aug of 2011 for 800 dollars. As a business owner I could never tell my customers, don't worry about the quality, just call me when ever you need my item to work, I'll have new parts to you in a few days. SO TODAY I GAVE IT AWAY, zero dollars, haul it away, ba bye. Traeger you can insult and disrespect someone else. I will do everything I can to discourage people from buying a Traeger. I have read the reviews and have found I am not the only one with these problems. The Traeger family have made their millions and I'm sure they don't give a crap, but if it is possible to keep one person from buying this grill, I will rejoyce in my accomplishment. Update 2 - It is said I have no substance in this review. I hate this Traeger so much I will add a little substance. Many people love the "Traeger" flavor or the quality of food cooked on it. A pellet grill is a pellet grill when it comes to flavor. They all work basically the same with a very few exceptions. I now have a MAK Grill 2 star general. The Traeger is a Yugo (crappy car for those not familiar with the Yugo, lol) I had 2 ignition rods go out and the controller. It was most likely the controller in the first place. I had some rain get in the side and the pellets in the feed tube got wet. Could happen to anyone. BUT if you wand to work on a Traeger you must lay on the groud with a flashlight and look up under to work on it...IT SUCKS. If the pellets get wet you have to hammer it out of the unit. THey swell and become a very hard wood mass about 18" long. The auger is basically cemented into the grill. Now it is true the same would happen to any pellet grill exposed to rain water, Traeger does nothing to facilitate the removal of the pellets after use. The MAK has a little easy to use door in the hopper. If you want to change the type of pellets or if you know you are not going to use it for a while. Open the flap and out the drop. With a Traeger, get a vacuum and clean out what you can't dig out by hand. Oh!!! while you have the vacuum go ahead and clean the ash from the fire box also. And again the MAK has a door for that too. Just grab a small bucket and a whisk broom, you'll be done in 2 mins. Remember the laying on the ground to work on a Traeger? The MAK loads its components from the end, just kneel down with a screw driver and open it up...if you ever have too. Hell its so simple you might want to just to see the quality of your grill. I have 2 friends with Traegers and the paint is all cooked off and they look a hundred years old..The MAK is solid stainless, thick, heavy duty stainless. The wheels on a Traeger only turn on one end, kind of a pain to move, other grills have casters on all four legs so they are much easier to move aroud. I don't want to continue but I did want to say, Pellet grills are great inventions and the food you can cook on one will blow the mind of the average weekend bbq/smoker guy (Like me), but a Traeger has several issues in my opinion and there are many other pellet grills out there and most cost a lot more. The grill I ended up with is twice as much. But it is better made, bigger and way more versatile, PLUS the MAK will sear steaks with grill marks and an open flame. Good luck and keep grillin'
