These authors are WAY into gatekeeping
The Good:
It's such a shame, The Crystal Witch really does have a lot going for it. There's beautiful presentation and lots of useful information.
The Bad:
As with other books in this series, this one is about Wicca. Now, if you're familiar with their other books or you are able to browse through the book before buying, you will find this out. However, if you see a cover that simply says "The Crystal Witch," I wouldn't blame you for assuming it's for all witches, and not specifically Wiccans.
This is a thing that is happening in books about witchcraft, and I don't care for it. In my view, authors should present their works as Wiccan if they are Wiccan, rather than as general witchcraft.
And now, the downright UGLY:
From page 11 - "The Wiccan Rede
As with all things Wicca, there are only a handful of rules:
1. Only perform magick with good intent.
2. Your need must be genuine and not for greed.
3. Never set out to harm another.
4. Never cast spells to influence a person's free will.
5. Always be sure to work for the greater good.
This is what being a witch means today.
It doesn't matter what strain of
witchcraft you follow; you cannot call
yourself a real witch if your intentions are not proper."
WOOOOOOOOOWWWWW
Ok, ladies. This is most definitely the last thing I ever buy from either of you.
As Wiccans, you follow a specific religion. And that's totally ok. Wicca has a lot in common with my own path, and I have no issue with it. But you do NOT own the word witch, and you do NOT get to tell people who belong to other paths and religions that they aren't real witches because they don't believe as you do.
That list of five rules is fine for whoever wants to follow them. That statement afterward is nothing more than disgusting gatekeeping, and especially in the case of witches of color with cultural traditions that do not follow those rules, it's nothing short of bigotry.
If you ask me, the statement made by these authors on page 11 is FAR worse than working a sour jar on an abuser or performing a spell to bring wealth. You can both GTFO with that nonsense.
