The reason for the low rating is at the time of purchasing this product we weren't enlightened to the fact that a high carbohydrate diet, especially one with excessive potato causes yeast to form and spread into yeast infections. Our dog would develop fungus infections that would come and go periodically on his head, face and neck - bumps and skin redness in which the hair would go away and be replaced with skin lesions/fungus. We used to treat it with Castor oil and essential oils, which helped for a while until it came back. We figured it was the brand of dog food causing it so in a good faith effort we switched to the Healthy Kitchen base mix and gave our dog "organic" chicken we boil whole ourselves. After giving our dog the Honest Kitchen the issue became worse. We also gave our dogs Sojos, which is the same concept as HK and it also worsened the condition. After some research, we discovered the yeast issue is from carbohydrates/sugars - mainly from potatoes (and/or grains). We found the first two ingredients in the HK were potatoes - i.e. this product is starch heavy. Dog's digestive system transform the carbs into sugars, which the yeast thrive on. So if you have a dog with a dry coat, funny smell in ears, breath, "arm pits" or has skin abnormalities your dog may have high yeast and infection from the result of that. Ideally, we learned, a dog should be on a diet primarily of protein (meat) with added veggies and fruits and that the first 5-6 ingredients on a label should not be carb based like rice or potatoes. If the product does have rice or potato, make sure it is listed after the 5th or 6th ingredient. After heeding this advice and taking our dog completely off potatoes and starches the yeast immediately began to recede and he's had perfect skin and coat for months now.
