I WANT MY TIME BACK!!!
I have a rule that I don't buy a book unless it has at least a 50% 5-star rating. I just checked this and realized it only has a 40% 5-star, but it was free. So I tried it. All I can say is that I got my money's worth. Zero.
I want my time back!
I've walked out on movies, and stopped reading books before. When I was laughing and telling my husband some of the ridiculous turn of events that were happening he logically asked, "Why are you still reading it?" Well, at the point that really turned me off happened was about 85% into this 540 page book and I wanted to see how the author could possibly pull this back into reality. I must admit, I skimmed a lot of the grandiose speeches at the end.
This long book starts off with some interesting situations and characters. I actually enjoyed a wise minor character, but he dies after about 10 pages. While not a rapid page turner, there was enough to pull you in. I actually liked the main character at the beginning. SPOILER ALERT, I am now going to list some of the professions accomplished by the cast of characters, although not by name, and if you want to dedicate time to this book, you may not want to know any of following.
Two characters become college presidents (no wait, it gets better), one becomes not only THE prima ballerina of the US, but is known world wide, one becomes an impactful photojournalist (at age 19), his basketball playing college friend goes pro and is signed by the '76ers, another becomes head of Doctors Without Borders, when the photojournalist helps his '76ers friend go into politics, for reasons not discussed, he is pulled in too and becomes (wait, wait.....) yes, President of the United States, and then asks his '76ers friend to become his VIce President (even though they are not of the same political party, no matter, he's accepted by all), and yes, there IS more but it's too convoluted to continue. I kept waiting for a Nobel Prize or academy award, or maybe President of the Intergalactic Universe.
The wheels came off this baby and it was laughable. And (total spoiler) the prima ballerina who was once the photojournalist/President of the U.S. lover turns out to his half sister, she wants to continue the relationship, he can't get past the incest, so she dances at his fund raisers to help get money.....
Yes, yes, I am an idiot for finishing this. Do yourself a favor and don't start
