This book was downright terrible. I read the first book
I generally would not write a review unless I have finished a book. I am making an exception. This book was downright terrible.
I read the first book, and though the writing style didn't mesh well with me, I still liked the story line and wanted to see if the writing would get better, as most authors grow in their skill as a series progresses, how in the world this author managed to do just the opposite blows my mind.
The writing was even worse! She continually contradicted herself. In one section, where the protagonist was picking her mount, which oh, big surprise, was this massive otherworldly beast that no one could touch (ghasp), she walked to us "somehow unafraid" and once she was in the stall, she was "trying to hide her fear". How was she trying to hide her fear if she was unafraid?
Those small things I really could forgive, really, I could, if that was the only issue. Everything seemed forced, from the friendship that held no real depth between the protagonist and her co-prisoner, to their fight in the woods. How is it that two young, and mostly untrained, girls fight off hundreds of elite army men, with the help of a bunch of malnourished prisoner-boys, all while starving, and then just ride away, when their original purpose was to steal the soldier's food so they don't starve?
I could actually go on and on, but I won't. If you read the first book, and like me, liked the story and thought it would get better, you're just as wrong as I was. Please, save your four dollars, I wish I had. seriously.
I will close with this, and hope that the author pays attention to her reviews. There was so much potential in this story line, and if there was a deadline involved, then it makes sense. Slow down, this book was too forced and should not have been released in this state. If the book is rewritten, and time is taken to make it more readable, I will definitely give it another try, however, as it stands, I won't be going any further (Got half-way through, I really did try), and will be seeing if I can get my $4 back.
