A Horrible Experience
After purchasing the mezuzah I asked if it was kosher. A kosher mezuzah for observant Jews is an important requirement. If it is not kosher the mezuzah fails of its essential religious purpose, in much the same way as holy water that is not properly sanctified is only regular water. The vendor responded that he did not know if it was kosher and then proceeded to expound Christian dogma along with quotes from the New Testament. Some direct quotes from his correspondence is in order: "And how does a mezuzah full fill [sic] the law anyhow. God said to write the law on your door post, not to buy it on paper, put it in a holder and nail it up where nobody can read it. Reading it was the whole point wasn't it? And if God told all the people to write it on their door post where does buying something kosher come in? Someone else came up with that one. Can't you see how that is just man's religion?" As if this dismissive rant was not enough the vendor continued: "God knew we couldn't keep his laws. So he provide [sic] another way for us to be brought near to him. Are [sic] sins have separated us from our God and no law can make up for that. You know the gospel where God sent Jesus to be that sacrifice to pay for our sins and do away with the law and the guilt it brought so we could be reconciled." I wondered why an individual such as this would be selling a Jewish religious devotional item which is regulated by numerous laws of kashrut when he cannot tell you if the item is kosher, mocks Jewish law (which is profoundly disrespectful), and then proceeds to apparently proselytize. His goal of proselytizing can fairly be known from his own words : "Salvation is of the Jews. I have no problem with Jewish people . . . I do however have a problem with anything that may keep any person from finding their way to God. I believe many people are being led astray. I know what happened to bring me to the Lord and I share it with all I can." It seems to me that any Jew requiring a kosher mezuzah be aware of the pitfalls. I was offended deeply by this vendor and his unwelcome rant. The question as to whether the mezuzah was kosher only required a simple answer without the accompanying inappropriate Christian polemic. Amazon is not the forum for this kind of behavior in my view. I am happy the vendor found peace and truth in Christianity. May he learn to keep his views to himself and spare others the burden of being the target of his self-righteous theological theories particularly as they relate to Jewish holy and devotional items such as mezuzahs.
