A failure on all fronts
Star Wars Battlefront 2 was formerly a pay to win mobile style game that Electronic Arts tried to scam it's consumers with. It’s the second botched PR launch that EA has done again with the freaking Battlefront property. One of the most vilified games ever. With the most downvoted comment in reddit history, the lowest user score in metacritic history with a 0.8 at the time of this review. The biggest question that needs to be asked, does Star Wars Battlefront 2 deserve the hate it is getting from fans and consumers alike? Let’s find out.
The Good:
I am going to praise Battlefront to a bit before I rip it to shreds. Think of the calm before the storm.
-Improved since the last game. With classes and more rewarding gameplay than the last one. Heroes and Vehicles can be bought through in-game match coins now instead of camping a spawn to play as Luke you can do good and buy him and play him.
-Graphics and sound. This one is a given but the game looks better than the last one especially on the pro and the x with a solid steady 60 frames per second. The sound is star wars so it expect epic music and great pew pew sounds The cutscenes are nice and the facial animations prove that Bioware didn’t know how to make females look on the frostbite engine with Mass Effect Andromeda.
- Free Content and more content at launch than the first game. One of the biggest outcries of the first game is now fixed with my favorite the clones wars back with all three era and more planets even a Single Player campaign. No Season Pass all DLC will be free with no split playerbase.
The Bad:
So, how did EA screw this one up so bad it should be at the very least a decent game and not this dumpster fire.
-The Loot Boxes. EA saw how much Overwatch made on the loot boxes and decided to build Star Wars Battlefront 2 from the ground up around them. Unlike Overwatch which is just cosmetics. EA took the abysmal star cards system and build it around them. Star Cards are gameplay modifiers that give your character mods to improve them. What made this worse was you could of previously bought them with real money to Pay to Win. Even though EA turned of microtransactions the game is still built around the freaking loot boxes so progression is utterly crippled because of this. With the most egregious loot box system in the industry I am not even excited for the new “free content” when I know 100% most of it is going to be locked behind these dumb boxes. Oh yeah, even though EA has “turned off” the microtransaction they are planning to return them at a later date so it not fixed EA just wants to cool of this titanic PR blunder that has investors worried. I hope EA realizes that they could have just put loot boxes full of star wars cosmetics and they would have made fist full of dollars, but no they went for the most intrusive and hands down worse system that makes the Call of Duty WWII with its public spectacle loot boxes look like the greatest loot box system ever. This game is a giant loot box! It takes more than 4,500 hours to unlock every base-game piece of content in Star Wars Battlefront. Even though it has more content than the first game you won’t see all of it. Which is just infuriating that how stupid EA can really be.
-Progression, it's tied to the star cards which is tied to the surprise surprise the loot boxes. A bad progression system can destroy a multiplayer game. It does for Battlefront 2 where you have to grind a lot to get to the items you want. The gameplay is decent but if you aren’t progressing to some goal or it takes a long time to achieve a goal. What is the point of even playing? Sure you have more content but if your progression is one big dreadful mmo-esque grind than what is the point of even playing if you're not having fun.
-Arcade Mode has limited credits reductions just like a free to play mobile game the grind is laughable limited per day. Honestly EA should have just made this game free at this point with another wall.
-Story is four hours and is a generic defect story with Iden two missions in decides the empire is actual the bad guy and she is going to fight for the right side. Which was disappointing to say the least. Here I thought they were going to do something unique and original but in a game whose base content is locked behind a freemium model I was sadly mistaken.
-The deluxe edition is pay to win $20 extra dollars needs you a powerful star cards and last jedi skins. I did not receive the deluxe code with my copy amazon send to me so I paid extra for nothing.
Verdict:
Star Wars Battlefront is the biggest failure of 2017 hands down. When you take a property like Star Wars one of the most beloved franchises in the world and Battlefront another childhood cherished game. Make it to one of the most controversial products to the point where government investigations are conducted over the most egregious model of monetization of a $60 game. To the point where the controversial first game with it’s season pass and lack of content is child’s play compared to this one. If Star Wars Battlefront 2 isn’t a bad game I don’t know what is. Thank you EA you took one of my most cherished childhood games and ruined the franchise.
