Wireless connectivity issues and high acutance prints
Printer #1: Printing across wifi in high quality caused only ~1" of the photo to print before the printer hung indefinitely. Surprisingly didn't work when connected with a wired connection either, so we returned this printer.
Printer #2: Printed across wifi and across a wired connection right out the box. We were excited! Unfortunately, the prints appeared hyperrealistic. It seems to me that Epson might be doing something to the photos in software - such as sharpening with an unsharp mask - to make them appear to have very fine detail. Sure, the detail is good. But these photos look contrast-expanded and unrealistic. I'll have to look for something to reduce this effect since it's undesirable to me.
After a having this printer for a few weeks, it now has the same problem as the first one. Our wireless network is up 100% of the time, the printer says it's connected to the wireless network, but it only prints ~1" of the top of the photo, hangs for a few minutes, then cancels. Very frustrating. We are running Windows 7, have a hidden SSID and use WPA2, so you might not have this problem if your configuration is different.
Update: Attempted to fix this with a "Restore Default Settings" command and reinstallation of the software. That's when I discovered that Epson installed 10 pieces of software on my system (listed under the Uninstall or change a program window in Control Panel) just for this printer! One piece of software is called the "Epson Customer Experience" which is a terminate-stay-resident (TSR) program that runs all of the time in the background. Who knew? My advice to everyone is NOT to use the factory install CD since it puts too much useless software on your machine. I downloaded the driver only from the Epson site and my printer is working again. Therefore, for anyone having connection errors or printing problems with the XP-820, do a factory restore to defaults and UNINSTALL all Epson software before reinstalling ONLY the printer driver from the Epson website.
Epson - you need to give people more information on what they're installing and what you're tracking. Installing 10 pieces of software for a single printer including a background TSR "customer experience" program is bad form.
