Looks nice, but too dry...and what's in them?
This is 1 of 4 reviews I have written for personal hygienic wipes. Yes, I have a life, and no, I am not bored. I just found myself in a hygiene dilemma lately and thought I'd try to help others in similar straits. I didn't realize you could acquire IBS later in life. Well, you can. I spend a lot of quality time in the bathroom nowadays, and have a greater need for "extra" cleansing power than before. 'nuf said. I also have sensitive skin, which I don't think I mentioned in my other reviews.
I bought 4 different brands of wipes, including ButtValet, and did a side by side comparison. I looked at them in terms of cleansing ability, convenience, and "friendliness" toward the environment and the delicate areas. I looked up the ingredients in the EWG Cosmetics Database to determine what it is used for in the product, and to assess the risk of skin reaction and toxicity. I did physical tests to evaluate for moisture content, tear strength, flushability, and ease of use- as shown in the photos.
The good about ButtValet:
-The packaging is discreet, at least on the front. They do say "ButtValet.com" in fairly prominent type on the reverse side, so don't drop them in front of a colleague on the way to the bathroom. Notably, the ones I got have a different logo from the ones depicted in the Amazon description.
-The wipes are large and adequately resistant to tearing. They were the 2nd strongest of the four I tried.
-They smell good. They are not perfumey or fruity- just lightly fresh and clean
The not so good:
- They are too dry and drag across the skin. I am able to get some liquid out of them if I try very hard, but the small amount is distributed through a pretty large and thick wipe.
- They're hard to open. The tear notch is too far from the top of the packet, and the material is too thick so you have to rip it apart rather than tear.
- There is no ingredients list on the packet, the box, or the manufacturer's web site.
- I am not sure about their flushability. They hold up darned well to a strong pull, and one of them did not clear the trap in the toilet when I flushed.
Dryness = ouch. That's a non-starter if you have to wipe a lot, and I do. I would also prefer to know what is in the product I am applying to my body, especially when I'm going to do it frequently. Overall, I was not impressed with the product in light of the glowing reviews. Maybe they could have been a contender if they were a little wetter, and I might bump to 3 stars if they would disclose the ingredients. It's great that they don't have alcohol or parabens, but what DO they have?
The other 3 products I tested were: Dr. Soother's Healthy Wipes, Down There Wipes, and Fresh Exit. See those reviews.
