12 years ago, when I started my own business, I had a personal Amex Platinum with limit probably in excess of $100k, so I thought. I was running short on cash so I started using Amex and ran up a balance somewhere in the neighborhood of $10,000 at most. Then they suddenly slashed my limit to where I simply couldn't use the card anymore. About 2 years later, my business stabilized with comfortable cash flow. I paid back the remaining balance on Amex and cancelled immediately. I vowed I would never use Amex again. I'm fine without it. Citibank did the same. I cancelled those as well. I'm sure they aren't the only ones, but those two were the most notorious that still remind me of the hard times. It's all fine having a shiny piece of plastic when things are going well. Just don't count on them when it's not.
