DO YOUR HOMEWORK!
I had this cage for one of my first pigs, back when I didn't do my research. There are tons of things wrong with this cage and the products included, more specifically the food. Here are just a few things you should know. 1.This cage is way too small for one pig, let alone two. With a hideout, a hay manger, a food bowl and a chew it only gives the pig enough room to turn around. This cage is a literal glorified litter box, made to target inexperienced or new guinea pig owners. Guinea pigs travel in herds for miles a day in the wild, and keeping a pig alone in this tiny cage is cruel. Pigs should have at least 1 square meter for a comfortable area to live in, but of course more is better. Not only is it cruel, but so expensive! $50 for something that isn't even good for the pig is absolutely ridiculous. Why spend $50 on something so cheaply made and tiny when you can make your own customizable and easy to put together C&C cage for $25-50? C&C cages look absolutely wonderful and have just enough room for a pig to live comfortably in. If you have this cage I STRONGLY recommend either making a C&C cage or purchasing a MidWest Guinea Pig Habitat for $40. I kept my first pig in this cage, and since I have moved her to a 2.5X4 gird C&C, I have seen a major difference in her behavior and health- she is more comfortable around me,less skittish and more accepting towards her buddy. I now use the tray as a "kitchen" area for them, and the rest was tossed away as it got damaged. This can also be made into a hamster cage with some alterations. 2. The food is unhealthy for pigs. Guinea Pigs require a cup of natural timothy based pellets with no artificial additions and colored tidbits. You see those colored pieces in the mix? That is basically junk food for guinea pigs- it may taste sweet and tasty, but it isn't good for them. Just like a little kid eating candy before dinner, guinea pigs will choose to eat the colored bits and leave the actual good, healthy stuff behind. While these may not kill guinea pig, they are very unhealthy and do more harm than good. A brand I strongly recommend feeding your pig is Oxbow pellets, which come in two variations- adult and young mixes. I use adult for my pigs, but if your pig is under six months, feeding the young pig mix is a pretty good idea. Don't forget pigs need a constant supply of pellets and timothy hay, and need vegetables with Vitamin C! The rest of the kit is fine, the bedding is paper based which is the best possible bedding to get, the water bottle is of course cheaply made, but not harmful to the pig and the bowl is okay I guess. I personally prefer using ceramic bowls as the pigs may chew the plastic, which is not good for them, but plastic bowls overall are not something major to stress about. If you are a new guinea pig parent and are looking for more information to make your pig's life as best as you possibly can, I recommend checking this forum out-[...] The forum has tons of useful information and tips for those on budgets. And please, PLEASE remember that before getting any animal-from the smallest mouse to a horse- DO YOUR RESEARCH! (The attached picture is a photo of my C&C cage, which I have upgraded since then when I took it. I have added another hideout and doubled the grids up for smaller spacing. The bedding in the tray is NOT pine or cedar shavings, they are aspen, to avoid confusion. I now use pelleted paper bedding in the tray for easier clean up, and I continue using fleece bedding.)
