Broke three months out of warranty - not durable
I'll start off by saying that I loved this oven. It did everything I needed it to and more, including toast, roasts, braises, and baking. That's why I'm so disappointed that it broke just three months after the warranty expired. Out of nowhere the oven just became nonresponsive (blank screen). This oven is incredible but it is EXPENSIVE. It is TOO expensive to only last fifteen months, that is what I would expect from some disposable cheap product.
I'm going to contact Breville customer service but I'm not holding my breath for a favorable resolution outside the warranty period. I'll update this review with what comes next.
If you are set on this oven, I'd recommend paying extra for the warranty. Otherwise, look elsewhere. But even the extended warranty is only two years, and if it is necessary to replace this every two years I would still say your better off looking elsewhere for both a durable and quality product. I'd say this oven is good quality but not durable enough to warrant the cost.
EDIT: My friend recommended a solution to my problem - contact American Express and use their 1-year warranty extension program. I did this instead of trying to navigate through Breville's customer service (which seemed harder and more time-consuming than it should be). AMEX did a great job, and just refunded me my money. I did some follow-up research to see what compact oven to buy, and it seems like enough people are having issues with their Breville out-of-warranty that I didn't want to risk it again. I ended up going with the new Cuisinart TOB-260N, and I'm so far very pleased with the purchase. It isn't as intuitive to use as the Breville, but the build quality is just as nice and the cooking results are as good if not better. The extra accessories with this oven were really nice (pizza oven and extra rack on top of broiler pan and baking sheet). I also think the Cuisinart baking sheet is higher quality than the one I got with the Breville. Oh, and the most important thing - there is a 3 year warranty on the Cuisinart! I think that says a lot about the longevity that Cuisinart expects from this kind of product. Also, when I purchased my Cuisinart it was $190, nearly $100 less than the Breville.
