★☆☆☆☆
Great idea ruined by . . . the actual movie.
Despite its poor performance in the box office, I had been looking forward to this film for months because the idea was so interesting. But stunted plot points and a jumpy timeline combined to remove virtually all chances for character development or audience empathy. It felt like a good 2 hr. movie that some crappy editor decided to chop down to 90 mins. by removing all subtlety and build up. Such helpful cinematic features are replaced by long-winded and awkward discussions of masturbation and disgusting, over-the-top acts of violence that seem to come out of nowhere. For a movie that couldn't spend a few extra minutes giving its audience some background context or characters to care about, it sure didn't mind lingering on useless and disturbing gore. This film could have (easily) been great. If the screenwriters were not up to the task, they could have at least settled for mildly thought provoking. Instead they used a fascinating premise as a mere springboard for a slasher film.
