Not a Food, Just a very low quality Snack
Firstly, this is not squirrel FOOD. This is a snack mix. This bag would NOT be suitable for sustaining the life of a healthy squirrel. I purchased this to feed a rescue squirrel based on the 5-star reviews, before I learned what squirrels actually require, nutritionally. There are some good things about this mix. Namely, the inclusion of many striped sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds. That's it Lets go down the list of why this is a "Do Not Buy" item, even for feeding wild squirrels at the park. 1) The majority of the bag is corn. Corn has almost no nutritional value for squirrels, but they love it. Corn will make them fat, unhealthy, and even diabetic. It makes them less motivated to forage and more dependent on humans, while not providing any benefit. 2) The quality of the nuts in this bag is very questionable. Rotten walnut, fungus on the shells of shelled almonds, and generally low quality reject looking nuts make up much of the bag. I would be concerned about feeding these to squirrels for health reasons. 3) Peanuts. Peanuts have no nutritional value at all, and their shells often carry a fungus. Tin Tin the Squirrel can tell you all about why peanuts are bad. I don't have time. 4) 95% of the nuts in this mix do not include shells. Squirrels need to chew the shells to keep their teeth filed down. If they only have soft nut meat and no shell, their teeth will overgrow and cause health problems. I would not recommend this mix nor buy it again. Go to your local organic market and buy a pound of plain sunflower seeds and a pound of plain sunflower seeds, mix them together with some shelled walnuts, shelled pecans, and now you have a healthy nut mix.
