Spiritual Gaslighting....mocking God as art.
The first episode started of well, beautifully shot, weird characters with a Skinwalker ranch legend feel to it. I am a Prime Video subscriber and I did watch the 1st two episodes. Any lover of paranormal legends might have found this to be a potentially good show...at least at first! The filming was great and for those who complain about the filming and cinematography being too dark, you may need to adjust your sets particularly those sets that have shadow detail and black level controls and set your gamma(midlevel brightness) controls a little higher. The camera people messing around with high dynamic range digital cameras and with digital editing could of course could have limited their lighting dynamic ranges to allow an easier viewing experience . Sometimes the ability to use more natural light and to minimise studio lighting to save money is not always a good thing. For the larger UHD TV's set for it, the viewing is wonderful. My main beef is the hamfisted out and out slam against God. The Josh Brolin character helps his drunken son and son in law cover up manslaughter, then prays a "blessing" for the meal by angrily cursing and demanding God come down and "explain" himself. The theme is repeated several times in the 2 episodes as the director shows a bit of homespun needle work with words imploring that the Lord .."reveal himself to us". I was reminded of Job in the Bible when God approached Job(who at that time had suffered all that a person could suffer) Job 38:1Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, 2Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge? 3Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me. 4Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. The writers and directors clearly have a beef with religion and God in particular that they wished to inoculate their viewers with thru 'art" thru what could have been potentially a good series. The writers, director and the actors should be warned that the request that God "explain" himself could be answered with..."No you will explain yourselves to me!" I won't be watching this series anymore. There are situations in life that can make a man question faith but those situations are unscripted in real life and best dealt with by living thru raw experience with faith, prayer, and the intersection of questioning and suffering and the releasing of pride and anger. Being forgiven,, accepting forgiveness, and in turn forgiving others is the best way such "unfathomable" situations often turn out even if questions regarding the existence of suffering are never answered in our life times. If that was the writers', actors',and the directors' "intent to explore" they have made a mockery of it!
