'A Hot Mess' of inconsistencies would've been a more appropriate title
The inconsistencies in the character personalities are astounding. The author would say a character was one way but all the evidence did not support that. For example, Alexander is a Navy SEAL, therefore, due to his training and experience I'm assuming he is constantly aware of his surroundings and collects whatever data/information he can. FALSE! He never reads the letter his father left for him (regarding Olivia, I'm assuming) which leads us to character flaw #1. A Navy SEAL would always want any information available about a situation so they are more aware and not going in blind. They are TRAINED to think that way. Character flaw #2: When Olivia escapes out the back of her house, Alexander thinks "I didn't know there was a door down here, I've never been downstairs before" Really? A Navy SEAL would've done recon and researched possible escape plans, especially since he knew people were after her. Essentially, way too many personality flaws that didn't make sense. Just because you say a character is one way, doesn't mean they are. As an author you need to show me (which the author failed to do), not tell me.
Here are some parts I highlighted, or thought about while I was reading that didn't make sense:
1) After his first conversation with Adele, Alexander calls her a "b**ch" in his head. Then two pages later his brother says "Oh, you're still talking to that b**ch?" Alexander responds with, "She's not that bad." Ummm, YOU just called her that a page ago...
2) 'Grabbing his cell phone out of his pocket, he saw one more missed text from Olivia. He thought again about responding, but simply couldn't do it.' Where is this coming from? He has never ignored her before, in fact, he responds to her text within seconds. So this didn't make any sense. The only reason this happened was so Olivia could believe he ditched her for Adele.
3) Then we get this as an explanation for why he didn't answer Olivia's texts "I just needed to focus on the weekend. On my friend. And I felt guilty, I guess, if I didn't devote the weekend to her memory." Wait! He devoted the weekend to Olivia's memory? Is that why he went out with Adele to a luncheon? Or, to a bar to get drunk with his brother? My mistake, I thought he was mourning his friend, who is alive by the way, so why he felt he needed to honor her memory, I'll never understand.
4) Alexander thought Olivia was dead for 21 years but he's never been able to let go. He is constantly searching for her in everyone he meets. Now, he knows she is alive and yet, he is just going to let her go and not fight for her. What? You didn't give up on the idea of her when you thought she was dead for 21 years, but now that you know she is alive you're not going to fight for her???
I have a lot more highlighted parts that show the inconsistencies of the characters, but I think you get the point. I haven't even touched upon Olivia, but let's just say that she was a naïve mess as well and just as inconsistent of a character.
