Bad Design - Avoid - Dropped Rating from 5 to 1 Star
Last update: 2-months and a few days: Dropping to one star. I contacted Samsung; rep said there's nothing they can do since there's damage. Here's the "funny" part--since the tab broke (a simple, tiny tab), the headset stopped working entirely the next day--wouldn't charge and wouldn't connect. So after my chat with Samsung, I decided to open the clamshell since I've got nothing to lose at this point. Inside the clamshell shows a circuit board, wires and battery contacts; nothing special. (See Photo) The problem is when the tab broke--it let the clamshell gap, and you guessed it, the battery contacts didn't connect anymore. When I put the clamshell back together, the headsets instantly came back to life and connected with my phone. One broken tab and the headset is dead. Wow. This is a gosh awful design. So, I will put some gosh awful electrical tape on the clamshell as a reminder of this poor choice. For the record, I am not a Samsung hater, just the opposite--I own two Samsung TVs, Fridge, Printer, Note 10.1 tablet, multiple Note 4's, Note Edge, Note 7, S8, S8+, two Gear Fits, and Gear S3. What I found makes me question Samsung's entire design philosphy, but ultimately does make sense because Samsung is in the business of selling you products. If a product lasts forever, they lose revenue. But they should be more concerned about losing customers. 2-Month Review Update: I'm saddened that I have to change my rating so drastically from 5 stars to 2 stars, but I have to post honest reviews. Or else, what's the point?! I was vacillating between 2 and 3 stars...would have given 2.5 if available. I have to go with my gut on this. As noted below, I am an office worker--nothing strenuous. I treated these headsets very gently and they always traveled in a bag when outside, or around my neck in the office. I pulled them out of my computer bag yesterday morning. A very small tab broke and in doing so, has left the clamshell enclosure with a marked gap. No way to fix it because the plastic tab piece is so small. See photos. I am still extremely happy with the sound, and extremely disappointed with the fragility. All in all, I have no idea who these headsets would be ideal for. Samsung really let me down with the poor design. Time to check warranty options. Purchase at your own risk. =========== Overall an outstanding product. When I purchased this headset on 26 July 2017, there were no reviews. And, while I don't write a lot of reviews, I wanted to take time to praise this excellent headset. Sound is extremely important to me. So just my opinion: I think the bass is a little thin, but adequate; I am not a bass head by any means. That said, the mids and highs are excellent and not tiring. I use them at work and multi-task--no critical listening involved. Even still, I am hearing nuances in songs that I've listened to many, many times and haven't noticed before (lots of classic rock & Pink Floyd). I own a cheap headphone amp and Sennheiser HD 600s and SoundMagic PL50's and these Samsung U Flex can hold their own. I've also tested Beats X, Jaybird X3, Altec Lansing, JBL, JLabs, and a variety of Amazon "specials." My ears prefer the Samsung U Flex to these other earbuds. Call quality is excellent--far and away better than any of the brands mentioned above. Be mindful of shirt collars and scarfs covering the microphone. As a bonus for me, these headsets can connect to multiple devices at the same time. I connect my Samsung Note 4 (more about that later) and my Microsoft Surface. I listen to music and watch videos on the Surface, and can still answer calls on my phone. The Samsung Level app will show you battery level and can alert you with basic or complex voice alerts regarding texts, incoming messages, Kakao Talk, etc. If you don't use the Level app the headset will just vibrate. With regard to the Bluetooth connection, this was odd. Just sitting at my desk, I was getting a lot of music drop outs when connected to my Note 4 phone. I surmised it wasn't the connection since I could walk away from my desk and be approximately 75 feet away (with internal building structure in the way) and still have music streaming from my phone. Some other earbuds were also dropping out at my desk, but I could only get about 25 feet away before losing signal completely. I then tested the headset with my Surface and not one dropout over hours and hours of daily listening. So I suggest if you experience any dropouts, that you test the headsets with another device and see if the dropouts still happen. Another reviewer commented that there's no track forward (or track back) function. This may be dependent on your device and app. I am able to track forward and back by long pressing the volume buttons--this works with the Note 4 and Surface. These headsets fit comfortably around my neck and fit my ears well. I did purchase Comply T400-style foam tips and they made the earbuds much more comfy for my small ears, and block out office noise nicely. I also used some black hairbands to route and reduce the cord length...out of the box, the cords were brushing up against my face and driving me nuts. I used Amazon Warehouse and got a huge discount. They advertised this headset as "Used-like new. Damaged box." (or something like that) Well the damaged box part was no understatement, but the headset and all accessories were brand spanking new, never used. I hope this review helps with your research and purchase decision. Cheers!
