Not poorly written, just unpersuasive
I just finished this book today, and was actually unimpressed in two ways. I had gone in expecting this book to really get me riled up, but it didn't. It also didn't persuade me either.
Thompson's book is actually not poorly written. He writes in a very colloquial style and the book is actually very readable. It's not particularly long and only took me a few hours to finish. While it is told in an autobiographical fashion, he occasionally veers off to discuss issues in greater depth.
Those looking for a strong critique of the video game industry will be sorely disapointed. The majority of the book deals with Thompson's crusade against the radio and recording industries, particularly his battles with Howard Stern and 2 Live Crew.
While some of Thompson's recounting of events seem somewhat dubious, where the book really suffers is in its attempted persuasion. Those who come in with a preconcieved notion on media censorship are unlikely to be swayed by the book. Readers who are Thompson fans will probably greatly enjoy the Thompson's reaffirmation of their beliefs. Thompson haters will likely go through the entire book mentally arguing with Thompson the entire time.
One thing I'd be remiss not to mention is the major influence of religion and Christianity in the book. Thompson is very heavy handed in his discussion of religion, frequently citing Bible verse in the book. This sometimes leads to somewhat offensive criticisms, particularly Thompson's thoughts and feelings on gay rights and HIV/AIDS. Those who are offended by frank discussions of religion and faith or overly boisterous "bible-thumping" should avoid this book.
Overall, I was really unimpressed with the book. I think a lot of people are looking for this book's publication to be a milestone, and, frankly, it falls short. Many of Thompson's arguements are poorly constructed and unimpressive. While the "faithful" will likely love this book, I can imagine few others that will find it enjoyable. Overall, its just disapointing.
