I can't even believe I finished the book, it was so awful.
Let me explain why I'm complaining about this book as clearly as possible so you can make an educated decision about whether or not to read it. It all started when the vamp chick met this kid at age 8. She watched him grow up and took care of him from afar until he became a college teacher in his early 20's. Do I sense a sex with mommy theme? Uh, yeah... When she revealed her true identity to him, he freaked out in such a shameful way that he almost killed himself running away from her, then stayed away from her for days. When they finally talked again, she first assured him that she loved him and he was safe with her. Then in the next breath, proceeded to tell him a list of "rules" of being with her, and that if he broke them, she would be forced to kill him, and that she has killed all her previous mates except the one that committed suicide. Uhh, ok. So we're then to believe that he stayed with her? Next, he gets a mysterious job offer from a woman who behaves just like his vamp girlfriend and even lays down some think innuendo about having him for dessert, but somehow the lightbulb doesn't go off that she's also a vamp??? Ok, this guy is beyond dim witted! I'm starting to hope he gets killed. So now he's kept prisoner at his vamp girlfriend's house to protect him, and she ignores him, talks harshly to him, scares him, and they argue constantly, but not in a passionate "I just love you so much" kind of way. She refuses to share anything about herself, even how old she is, and gets pissed if he even asks. Whenever she actually is nice to him, she talks to him like he's five. And she mommy's him like crazy, reminding him to drink water and take his vitamins. Eeewwwww!!! And when they have sex, it's always initiated by her and she tosses him around like a rag doll. It made me ill to read it. Now, if this isn't turning you off right there, keep reading... She refuses to even discuss turning him into a vamp. Not because she feels it's a bad existence, not because she feels like demon spawn, but because she likes the taste of his blood and wants to keep using him for that. Wow, that's love. So when they eliminate the danger and he's allowed to be free again, she won't even let him walk outside without watching him from a few feet away. Then she asks him to move in with her, and he agrees. (He AGREES?? Even the wimpiest female in vampire romance novels would run screaming at this point!!) Oh yeah, and when she has a nightmare, she attacks him while he is sleeping beside her and almost dies. Then they can't sleep in the same bed because she might accidentally kill him. Hmmm, wow... that might cause me some insomnia, personally. Oh and it's customary in the vamp community to "discipline" your mate for defiance by "fanging" them painfully. (So mate abuse is ok??? That would never fly if this mate were a female.) So more danger comes. The only strength this guy has is that he uses things and swings them like a bat... a tree branch, a crow bar, whatever. That's his entire contribution to his own safety. So when it all finally wraps up, which feels like a really long time because there are TONS of "scenes" of just him making a sandwich, playing a game, or LONG rambling conversations about the same darn thing that was covered chapters before and chapters after... anyway, so when it finally wraps up, it's unsatisfying for many reasons: She never reminds him of when they met when he was a child. No one at his work ever wonders where he has been. There is no talk of him returning to work, having any friends or anyone that he talks to, him becoming stronger in any way from the experience, or anything to indicate that this all took place in some semblence of reality. It closes with him just as weak as a drooling baby, and as clueless as he was from the start. Would you like to know the one thing he does in definace of her? The one major stand that he takes for his own independence and freedom?? Super close to sunset, just before she is able to go outside, he walks outside by himself and sits down on a park bench within her view. His heart is beating in terror for defying her, but he does it anyway. Oh my gosh, what a hero!! I'm awestruck and am falling in love with him right now as I write this. (I will now proceed to stick my finger down my throat to vomit.) Of course, moments later after the sun sets, she goes to him immediately and seems so hurt that he was afraid of her. Then proceeds to warn him that she will hurt him if he defies her again. Oh and did I mention, she's even taller than he is? When they are standing and talking, he's frequently described as looking up at her. I'm all for strong female leads and gender role reversals, but this is just sickening. If you like strong female leads (and even characters who are vamps named Kat with red hair) try reading Jeanniene Frost instead. At least she knows how to reverse roles and still keep everyone respectable. How could ANYONE has written a good review for this book? I mean, really people...
