I confess, I am a bibliophile. As such, I seldom see movies that I enjoy as much as the book, although most are benignly entertaining. I recently watched Amazon Prime's production of Tom Clancy's "Without Remorse". I am a fan of Tom Clancy. I admire Clancy's work because it uses a fictional narrative to accurately portray law enforcement and national security issues that are very real and well researched. All characters, not just the protagonist, are portrayed as very human with a wide ranges of strengths, weaknesses and are flawed, in some cases tragically. In many cases, even the villains generate empathy, or at least we have a genuine understanding of their motives. I can honestly say that I've learned something I did not previously know or fully understand in every one of his works. All of his work, for that matter all art, has an undeniable core of truth. Clancy is renowned for his meticulous research and accurate recounting of the board pictures of issues, providing plausibility and truth. I had the honor of hearing Tom Clancy address the 170th Session of the FBI National Academy in 1992. He engaged in a long question and answer session with the audience. He autographed my book with zeal and grace. The most glaring error in the Amazon production is the stated motivation of the protagonist, John Kelley. All of Clancy's heroes are true patriots who recognize that, even though the country sometimes has flaws and some people who are truly corrupt, the ideals of the founders of our nation and its Constitution are honorable and worth defending with one's life. Instead, the movie carefully points out that that Kelly served the Nation for what it "could be", not for what it is. The book comprehensively addresses the very painful issue of human trafficking, including that of women and children. It destroys the myth that prostitutes should be referred to as "sex workers", implying that they are voluntarily exchanging the use of their bodies for money. As a former peace officer, I know that the vast majority of prostitutes are forced into exploitation by others who profit from their abuse. Given the vast numbers of humans trafficked across our southern border, as we ignore our own immigration laws and encourage exploitation of every single person crossing that border, whether or nor sexually abused, this truth is indefensible by the political Left. Therefore, it is not mentioned at all. The "action" is completely removed from the United States and transported to, you guessed it, Russia, who the left desperately wishes us to focus upon while China is a far greater threat. In the movie, the greatest danger is that the US and Russia would actually conspire to kill a few of their own people, including Kelly and his family, to start a war for the profit of arms dealers. If this concept is not utterly ridiculous, I will not bother explaining reality. To me the movie is far from benignly entertaining. I see no appeal in single dimensional characters acting out violent fantasies for a vacuously immature audience. This movie defiles the memory and art of Tom Clancy. I am shocked that his estate would allow it to be published with his name. Perhaps the rights were sold, before the script was written. I doubt that Amazon will allow this review to be posted. If by chance you make it to this point, I highly recommend reading the book, Without Remorse. I don't believe it has been censored - yet. If you don't wish to purchase it from Amazon, I imagine it is available through your local library.
