Huge Disappointment
This controller was a huge disappointment! We had been using the VeraLite for about a year before purchasing the Samsung Smartthings. The VeraLite seemed a little slow, and there was always a delay if you would send commands through the app. Our house has about 25 Leviton switches and dimmers and three Leviton VRCS4-M0Z Vizia RF + 4-Button Remote Scene Controller. These scene controllers are key to the entire operation. My wife is never going to use a phone to turn lights off, and as I said, we have a lot of lights in the system. With theses controllers, she can hit one button and every light that she needs to cook dinner is suddenly lit. The VeraLite worked very well with these controllers; it was just a little slow through the app.
The Samsung Smartthings controller cannot operate or, more importantly, program these or ANY scene controller. The only way to turn on multiple lights at one time is to go through the app. There are no scene controllers on the market that will work with ST. I contacted support, and they told me to check out the Smartthings community. They were basically telling me that they didn't know and didn't care. I had already looked at the community postings (obviously), and I had even installed an app that was supposed to work with these scene controllers. The app did work some, but the button pushes would have to send a message back to the controller, and then the controller would send messages to all of the lights. This would take about 1 minute. With the Vera, the button push sends the message straight from the scene controller to all of the lights, so the scene changes happen instantaneously.
Maybe my unhappiness with this lack of scene controller functionality seems nit picky, but this is a core function of many automation systems. You should not buy this thinking that the home brewed app available on the Smartthings Community forum is going to work the way you want. It absolutely will not work the way you are thinking!!!
All that aside, the main reason we were shopping around was that the VeraLite seemed a little slow. After you use the Smartthings for a month, the VeraLite will feel like a supercomputer. The problem is that so many of the commands just fail. Sometimes you can't tell if it is just taking so long because it is thinking or because it just gave up. The last straw was our outdoor lights. With the Vera and Smartthings, they were set to come on every night at sunset. In about 25 attempts, the Smartthings only turned the lights on about 20 times. This is a very simple operation, that never failed even once with the Vera.
So ultimately, we returned the Smartthings and we replaced it with a VeraEdge. It works just like the VeraLite but is noticeably faster. I wasted so much time un-pairing and re-pairing, then un-pairing and re-pairing all of my lights and controllers (literally 3 full days). I made a terrible mistake! Please don't make the same mistake.
