★☆☆☆☆
Not a romance, very deeply depressing read.
**SPOILER**
This book is NOT a romance by any means. It is a story of a girl, from ages 12 - 15. She is the only female in the house until her father brings home a new wife. The new wife, of course is mean and cruel to everyone. The father does nothing to change her behavior while she mentally abuses the daughter, Amy. You think there is going to be some light of hope when the stepmother's brother comes for a visit, when Amy is around 15, but it turns into nothing more than practically a rape scene, then an obvious coercion into sex of 15 year old Amy while the brother is in his 20's. As typical, the brother, Jimmy, runs of and abandons her after she becomes pregnant. In step the wicked stepmother again, who then coerces her to give her baby away, sends her to nothing more than a "hospital" where they are mean and cruel. Then the step mother talks the father into marrying Amy off to some man almost 30 years her senior.
Of all the books I have read, this is the most sad, depressing of them all. Not one person stood up for her, even her uncle and aunt shun her when she becomes pregnant. Even the brothers who say they care, do nothing to stop any of the cruelty or the marriage to a mean spiteful old man. Even the father stands by and lets all this happen with out a care in the world. Yes, he states he wants what is best for her, but then let the bitchy cruel stepmother make the decisions to take away her baby, place her in a boarding house for 3 months where she is not allowed outside her room, then is treated horribly by the "nurses" who deliver her baby.
You are always waiting for someone to tell her she is a good girl, a smart girl, that she is lovable and she was naive, not a monster, but that person never comes.
I am so sad I read this book and I will not read another one by this author.
