★★☆☆☆
The very definition of the 21st Century
Once installed it looks great. Great coloring, and in general a perfectly-sized accent for a smaller room with otherwise-undecorated ceilings. I installed in a 12'x12' room with 10' ceilings, where the flush nature of the shade makes it fill the empty ceiling space without making the ceiling feel lower. For a ceiling of that height, a hanging fixture would've felt too cramped.
The shade itself does block a lot of light, so even with 4 bulbs it provides only-decent lighting for this 144 sq. ft. room. But no complaints there -- I was specifically looking for a stained glass fixture, figured it would block a lot of light, and picked this one because it featured more than 2 bulbs.
That said, everything else about this light, and I really mean EVERYTHING, is disappointing.
First, the fixture itself isn't stained glass -- it's plastic. Now, when I came back and read the ad carefully, it never claimed to be, so the fact that I was expecting stained glass is my fault. I was choosing between about 10 fixtures that came up when I searched "stained glass", and given the presentation, I did just assume. Although in my defense, clearly the search results and product titles were meant to encourage this assumption, which if you think about it carries a swath of commentary about today's world and the promulgation of information -- but what is this, an angsty millennial dissertation? A Russian think tank?? Let's just say I messed up in exactly the way the advertisers intended.
The more objective tragedy of this not being stained glass is that you can buy legitimate stained glass light fixtures for the same price. Given the quality of the construction this fixture is worth at most $50. Now, given the appearance, is it worth roughly $200? Despite my seething rage I have to admit the answer is "maybe". If you don't mind the hideous tactile sensation of low-grade PVC, the Sisyphean installation (see below), or the clamorous voices of self-loathing that eat away at you from inside, never letting you forget that you that you affixed a hunk of plastic to your ceiling while insisting to the neighbors, from between teeth clenched in a rictus grin, that it is a true work of art adorning that part of your manse nearest to an all-seeing God -- well then maybe pony up the cash. For everyone else, no.
Oh, and the INSTALLATION. Even in my first marriage I never felt so relentlessly stymied by fate. The mounting bracket is useless, the screw threads are too big for some holes and the screw heads are too small for others, the placement of most holes is asymmetric, there's no allocated space for the wires, and the wires themselves are made of what feels like plastic, and I can only assume they conduct electricity in much the same way that Kanye West forms sentences. I luckily happened to have appropriate-sized screws and rubber spacers on hand, but without them it would've been just another night spent weeping to Norwegian death metal. I'm pretty handy and it took me about 5 hours to get this installed.
In the end, if I wanted pretty-but-trashy, I'd still be on Tinder. Back it goes.
