Jack Ryan in Name Only
Such a let down. I hung onto Prime for this series, but the writing is juvenile, intellectually insulting, and littered with lifeless f-bombs and jarring vulgarities inconsistent with the sophisticated, well-read, educated professionals and academics being portrayed. Have the writers never encountered a professional office setting before? So unrealistic. The cringe-worthy, gratuitous nudity is voyeuristic, intrusive, and wholly out of place. Even the primary romance is just an awkward, dull first date followed by a meaningless, decidedly UNromantic hook up by two people who barely know each other. So boring. Was this script written by college sophomores?
Jack Ryan seems clueless and goofy, nothing like the sharp intellectual and insightful character in the books. He seems to shuffle papers and post-it notes until he stumbles onto the leads and clues rather than deciphering them (and I really hated seeing him bike through DC's crazy traffic-filled streets like he had no common sense). And what was with all the PTSD backstory? It never seemed to connect with the storyline as a whole, but seemed tacked on as an afterthought. The writing stinks.
Unlike Clancy's stories, this series lacks a compelling moral center. You have no one to really root for or against. The villains are inpenetrable (and apparently we're supposed to believe that not getting hired as a mid level French bureaucrat is enough to turn a Muslim into Osama bin Laden), and the "heroes" are base, self centered, rude, and dull -- with questionable loyalties and unpatriotic biases that openly (and unrealistically) conflict with their chosen careers.
This series is ruined by clunky and vapid dialogue combined with incoherent, disjointed, unsophisticated, and unrealistic storytelling. The writers are absolute hacks, I'm sorry to say. I'm not sure what audience the producers (including the series' star who is credited as an executive producer) were hoping to connect with, but it sure wasn't Clancy fans. Disappointing. I'm even missing Jack Bauer a liitle right now. Sigh.
Hunt for Red October-- that's Clancy well done.
