You can raise high achieving children without abusing them
I'm an Asian mother (not Chinese), and I was appalled by Chua's 'Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother'.
Let me tell you this. You can raise high achieving children without torturing them. I did it. It takes a lot more effort than Chua's method. If you do right way, you'll have happy children who enjoy learning, playing music, and the best of all, who love being with you. That's one of the reasons I just couldn't stomach Chua's pathetic excuses why she was so nasty to her children and her husband.
There were some funny parts in this book, but I don't think Chua intended it. Her selfish thinking was so outrageous that I had to laugh.
But the main reason why I give this book one star is not her parenting style.
This is just not a good book as a memoir.
Throughout the book, Chua kept on bragging about how great her daughters were at piano and violin. You just don't write a whole book about it. And, Chua was constantly insulting other ethnic groups. That's totally unnecessary.
I was completely sick of her by the end of the book.
