Good Book. Could be Great With 50% Fewer Pages
I'm reading this book now and am finding it very helpful. Segar provides concepts that are very helpful in interpreting my experience with fitness. But, man-oh-man, this book is a chore to read! If Segar re-wrote this book with 50% fewer pages, the book would lose nothing and could serve as an even more powerful resource for the readers she herself describes as frequently distracted in hectic lives.
Four stars because the content is great. Could be five stars at half the length. I would happily pay twice the price for this book if it was half its length.
UPDATE: I'm now 1/3 of the way through the book. I continue reading it because the concepts are insightful and useful, but the chore of plodding through the rambling content continues. I'm getting the sense that the author and editor (if an editor exists) could not decide what kind of book they wanted this to be. I dropped the rating to three stars because the book is increasingly less satisfying to read. I keep at it because I've not found these insights anywhere else, but ferreting them out is like going to the doctor for a series of treatments. They are beneficial but there is nothing fun about it.
SECOND UPDATE: Now 2/3 of the way through the book, I reduced my rating to two stars. The author's insights remain valuable and worth the effort to ferret out of the jumbled mess of content this book is, but I resent the jumbled mess. I would not recommend this book to a friend because I would not want to subject him/her to this frustrating reading experience.
THIRD UPDATE: I finished the book. It is sad and perplexing that a person with the high academic and field credentials Segar has produced such a disorganized book.
I urge Segar to publish a better-organized second edition that includes a workbook appendix. That approach would be better received and more useful to readers. Segar describes well the challenges and complexities of living life in today's world. She makes a fundamental error in assuming people will give her the time and mental focus needed to navigate the jumbled mess her book is.
