★☆☆☆☆
Damning if true, but premise rejected by America's foremost historians
The premise of this book would be damning if it were true. Yet the author has no formal training in history. And all the foremost historians of the American Revolution and of the Civil War (multiple Pulitzer Prize winners among them) have publicly denounced her premise as inflammatory and untethered to reality. The fact that the New York Times retroactively retracted the major argument of the book should itself dissuade anyone from using it as a trustworthy source. As historical fiction, it reads very well. As history, not so much.
