This is not a documentary, it's a long winded advertisement for a cover album.
I saw the preview for Echo in the Canyon a while ago and was excited to see it, being a younger fan of all the original 60's bands being profiled. When I saw it listed on Prime I plunked down the $15 and sat down to watch what I expected to be a great documentary. It didn't take long to realize that this was just a long form ad for a cover album featuring Jakob Dylan and friends. The interesting parts of the movie are the interviews with the musicians from the original 60's bands themselves, and the archival footage that supplements their stories. But every time you start to get in to the rhythm of hearing Brian Wilson, Michelle Phillips, or Roger McGuinn tell a story, it is interrupted by Dylan and friends doing a mediocre (at best - they really murdered the Beach Boys) cover version of the original song being talked about. It's too bad. This could have been a compelling 45 minute documentary on a very cool music scene that defined California rock and pop in the late 60's. As it is, it's torturous and cloying.
