Lord of the flies-across-the-screen
I've been a trackball mouse user for well over a decade. The Amazon Basics trackball mouse appears to be very similar in design to my favorite, the M570. As such, when one of my M570s started to fail, I thought I would give Amazon's mouse a try - what was there to lose?
Answer: my sanity.
Same simple USB transceiver, almost the same fit and feel to the mouse, but the mouse acceleration is on overdrive. There appear to be two modes of movement. Either you barely move the ball and you slowly creep across the screen, or you move slightly faster, sending the mouse pointer flying to crash into the far edge of your screen with an almost palpable thud, and then slowwwly creeping back to the spot you were aiming for.
I've changed the acceleration in my preferences. I've tried it in high and low DPI modes. I've reduced tracking speed and tried adjusting both of those again. The best I was able to gain was a state of "okay, okay, I can move the mouse relatively normally if I move it exactly this fast, and ... crap."
So I connected up my dying M570, readjusted my tracking and acceleration speeds, and came on here to start the return process.
Normally, I would give more than one star.
- The mouse is not flimsy. It's approximately the same mass as my M570 and the shell does not deform easily.
- The mouse wheel is no louder than my M570 mouse wheel.
- Contradicting another review, the ball is a standard size for this type of trackball mouse.
- The mouse is quite responsive (the angry chihuahua of trackball mice) and without any noticeable lag.
However, a mouse is one of the primary interfaces to our computers, a functional extension of our hands and fingers. If a mouse cannot be made to easily move the pointer to a precise location, it is of no real value. And for this I had to drop what could have been a 4-to-5-star mouse down to a single star.
