Findings: Pandemic makes all new things look exciting
If my well-worn/much-loved Polder temp probe had finally conked out, this purchase still wouldn't have been smart. Justifiable maybe, but not smart. Yes, the Yummly thermometer is accurate. ...Yeah, that's all I've got.
Hate to say it, but this is a really expensive solution to a problem nobody has.
I thought it would be nice having all the temp presets onboard. Of course, thanks to the interwebs all that info is already on my phone. For free. And your phone won’t leave an unsettling bullet hole in your filet mignon.
What you are actually buying is a ridiculously bulky app which tries to be your BFF, do the ironing, and walk the dog while giving you younger-looking skin in just 7 days. Recipes, menus, shopping lists, personalized ingredient preferences, food allergies, vegan, keto, etc. Even skipping through much of it, the startup survey took 15 minutes. I'm not saying that Yummly's real cash cow is big data, but I'm not sure it's thermometers.
There are tons of great wireless temp probes out there. For half the cost of this beast, you can get a really nice ThermoPro, Inkbird, or Soraken. NOTE: Choosing the best thermometer will depend on how you're cooking! If you're big on grilling/smoking, connectivity range and accuracy at lower temps will be critical. Do some research before sinking a bunch of money into one of these things.
So Yummly's headed for the Drawer of Shame next to the Kitchen Claws, strawberry slicer, and 8 different attempts to find the perfect egg poaching device. I'm chalking it up to a year of boredom and isolation, because otherwise I'd have to admit I'm an idiot.
